Double Cleansing: your skin will thank you!

Growing up with eczema as a child and severe acne as a teenager means I never had the privilege of clear skin. My parents spent thousands of ringgit on skincare and dermatologist for me. Ultimately, I was able to free myself from the clutches of eczema as I grew older (with better diet, of course). Thankfully, I also managed to control my acne breakouts after taking some oral meds – you can read all about it here.

Skincare has always been a life-long learning journey for me. After a year free from oral meds to control my acne, I have to take extra care in my skincare routine to not agitate the pimples. I’ve been reading about double cleansing for months now and finally took the plunge when my usual micellar water makeup remover ran out. So you can say, I made the transition from cleansing water to cleansing oil.

What is Double Cleansing?

Basically, double cleansing is exactly what it sounds like: washing your face twice. It is a skincare routine started by Korean women that use oil-based and water-based cleansers to remove pore-clogging and irritating environmental agents that lead to breakouts and loss of elasticity.

The Double Cleansing Process

I started off with 2-3 pumps with a splash of water to emulsify the oil (some cleansing oils cannot be emulsified so check which brand you have). I also used a facial brush by The Body Shop (RM14.15) to help with the cleaning process. Then I washed off my face with lukewarm water (be cautious to not use hot water on your face to stay safe) and repeat the cleansing process again, this time with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser (RM47.17).

Verdict: my skin feels cleaner and fresher but not squeaky-clean, which is a good thing. Cleansers or soap that leave your skin squeaky-clean are not good because it strips away moisture and natural oils from your skin. You can read more about it here.

Benefits of Double Cleansing

  1. Remove excess sebum and impurities, which when not cleaned properly will lead to blemishes.
  2. Allows skin to regenerate as a result of unclogged pores and clean skin environment.
  3. Skincare products will penetrate your skin better once it’s clean from clogged pores and films of dirt.

Cleansing Oils You Should Try

Bioré Cleansing Oil (150ml)

Biore Cleansing Oil leaves no greasy film on your face and maintains the skin’s natural moisture balance. However, it does not emulsify upon contact with water so you can just apply with dry or wet hands and rinse off with water.

NUTOX Cleansing Oil (200ml)

NUTOX Cleansing Oil feels light-weight on your face and can be emulsified with a splash of water. You may need to work on a few pumps to remove heavy makeup, but it will leave your face moisturized after the double cleansing process.

RM40.47 at Watsons.

SK-II Facial Treatment Cleansing Oil (250ml)

The cleansing oil by SK-II is a rich formula of Pitera™ and Apple Seed extract that deeply cleanses pores and effectively eliminates even the most stubborn makeup, mascara, and sunscreen. This is a 2-in-1 cleanser and makeup remover, which will leave your skin clearer and radiant.
