After two years of dating, I finally got engaged. I said “finally” because it took us almost a year to prepare for the engagement ceremony but that’s a story for another day.
My engagement ceremony took place at my parents’ new home in Bandar Enstek with a guest list of almost 200 people. It was a beautiful ceremony but getting there was not easy. The planning and preparation process was extremely difficult.
My main advice to girls who are planning on getting engaged: work on your breathing exercise because you will need it.
Breathing exercises will come in handy when you’re preparing for your engagement day. Trust me on this. Any time something did not go my way – I take deep breaths to calm myself down.
And the breathing exercise is most useful during the engagement ceremony itself. I can’t describe my feelings when I was waiting in a room upstairs before my family called me down for the ring ceremony. I was nervous, sweating, filled with joy but most importantly, I felt like running away.
I was very blessed to have my best friends and sisters with me. They kept me calm and my best friend had the most important duty, which was to make sure I did not run off through the back door. To them, I am forever grateful.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t get cold feet and changed my mind about getting engaged. I was just so nervous and my heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty and I felt suffocated. I just needed space to breathe.
But believe me, the moment I saw the love of my life walk through the door and saw me as his fiance for the first time, everything felt right. All the stress and pressure I went through to prepare for our engagement day was worth it.
I cannot thank everyone enough for being a part of my first special day (the nikah and wedding reception are yet to come). My ceremony was not how I planned it but it was perfect.
